ISU MSS17 Alyssa Frayling Reports from the German Aerospace Center DLR

Alyssa Frayling, a Master of Space Studies MSS17 student from the International Space University (ISU) reports from DLR where she is carrying out her internship.

“I am currently completing my internship at Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR) – the German Aerospace Center.

DLR is one of the most significant space agencies in Europe, and the Chair of its Executive Board is none other than Prof. Dr. Pascale Ehrenfreund, who is of course also ISU’s very own Vice-Chancellor!

I am lucky enough to be based at the DLR Headquarters in Cologne, within the Department of International Relations. The photograph is by the way taken with Sebastian Kleim from this unit. This department, led by Nicolas Peter (ISU MSS02), coordinates all international relations activities for space, aeronautics, energy, transport, security, and digitalization for the agency, whilst also advising the Executive Board and DLR Space Administration on all current and proposed international activities.

Despite not being able to speak a word of German, my colleagues easily welcomed me into the team, and I’ve since been able to become involved in several different projects. My main focus is on Africa: making an inventory of countries and organizations involved in space activities in each of the 54 countries (if indeed there are any), and analyzing their potential in terms of partnerships. I’ve also been helping in developing DLR’s strategic positioning overall.”
